#2 "Safe" Products

Most detailers and people I know don't think twice about using a home cleaner or car wash soap. It would make sense that anything sold in a store is perfectly safe to use, but often the word "safe" does not encompass every aspect necessary to determine the effects of these products.

There are legal limits to what companies are allowed to claim. If a product contains below a certain level of a chemical it is sometimes able to get away with not listing that chemical, or claiming that it is non-toxic, non-carcinogenic, etc. Think along the lines of a tic-tac having zero calories, but the entire bottle has 15 calories. Logically that wouldn't make sense, but since each piece has fewer than a set number, they are allowed to say zero. This can occur in the chemical industry as well.
Soap is a very low hazard chemical. We use it every day to wash dishes, our hands, cars, etc. There is an alternative in the detailing world called a rinseless wash. It is used to clean the car, but it does not need to be rinsed off like soap. It is very eco-friendly in the sense that it saves water, it is biodegradable, and non-toxic. I will make another post discussing that in more detail. I use these rinseless options, and I once had a conversation with a former chemistry teacher about their risk factors. He recommended that I wear gloves even though the product was technically safe. His answer surprised me, because rather than the chemical being harmful, it could actually strip my skin of protective oils that my body naturally produces.

The point of this post is to encourage you to question what you subject your body to. Is your sunscreen something you really want to have on your skin? Your shampoo? Your lotion? Your nail polish? There are safe versions of these products, and I suggest using them. Yvan Lacroix always says "if it's on you it's in you." He is right, most things aren't good to have in you.
